Simply Business is not an insurance company, and that's the point of it. It's a licensed digital insurance agency — a marketplace that takes one application and returns quotes from multiple carriers, then lets you buy online and download your certificate. Our verdict up front: for a small business buying its first general liability, BOP, workers' comp, or professional liability policy, Simply Business is the most efficient way to see several carriers' numbers side by side without phone tag. It's weakest where any marketplace is weak — complex or high-hazard risk, vehicle coverage, and buyers who want one carrier relationship for everything.
How we review shopping tools
We review marketplaces by walking their public quote flows, reading their disclosures and specimen policy materials, and comparing published pricing data — no paid placement, and affiliate links never change a ranking or a verdict. The full detail, including how we source every cost figure, lives on our methodology page.
What Simply Business is
Simply Business started in the UK in 2005 and opened its US operation, run from Boston, in 2017 — the same year Travelers, one of the largest business insurers in the country, acquired the company. It operates as a licensed agency in all 50 states and reports over 800,000 customers.
The structural fact that matters: Simply Business sells other carriers' policies. The carrier underwrites your risk, issues the paper, and pays your claims; Simply Business is the storefront and the servicing agent. That cuts both ways. You get comparison — the thing a single carrier can't offer by construction — but your long-term counterparty for claims is whichever carrier you land with, so the carrier name on the quote matters as much as the price next to it.
The quote flow, as a shopping tool
The flow runs the way a worksheet should: trade first, then state, then the rating facts — revenue, payroll, employee count. Answer accurately; these are the rating basis, and they resurface at audit time for payroll-rated lines. Where the panel has appetite for your profile, quotes come back with carrier names and limits attached, and you can adjust limits and buy online, or finish by phone with the company's licensed agents.
Two honest caveats from walking the flow. First, how many quotes return depends entirely on carrier appetite for your trade and state — sometimes several, sometimes one, and a thin result isn't a malfunction, it's information about your risk profile. Second, not every trade and line completes online; some profiles get routed to a phone follow-up to finish binding.
On the clock that usually matters — the certificate — Simply Business advertises COI access immediately after purchase, from your online account, with reprints and updates self-serve. That's the feature that wins the "client wants a $1M/$2M certificate by Friday" situation; our COI guide covers the mechanics, including additional-insured requests.
Which carriers it shops
At the time of this review, the US panel includes Travelers, Hiscox, Markel, Liberty Mutual, Clear Blue, Harborway, and workers' comp specialists such as Cerity — with availability varying by line, trade, and state. The lines it places: general liability, BOP and commercial property, professional liability, workers' comp, and cyber. The notable gap is commercial auto — plan on a separate errand for vehicles.
It's fair to notice that the marketplace is owned by one of the carriers on its own shelf. The format is the check on that: quotes arrive side by side with carrier names attached, so a Travelers number has to stand next to a Markel number and win on its own. We'd still tell you what we'd tell you about any marketplace — compare the carriers offered, not just the prices.
Where it fits
| Your situation | Our call |
|---|---|
| First policy, no agent relationship | Strong fit — real comparison without phone tag |
| COI gate this week ($1M/$2M ask) | Strong fit — online purchase, immediate certificate access |
| Mainstream trade: cleaning, landscaping, handyman, consulting, retail | Strong fit — center of the panel's appetite |
| Multiple lines, want one carrier for everything | Mixed — a direct writer may bundle more cleanly |
| High-hazard or claims-heavy risk | Weak fit — you want an independent agent or specialty broker |
Where it doesn't fit
Complex and high-hazard risk. Height work, prior claims, unusual operations — profiles that need surplus-lines markets or negotiated placements belong with a specialist broker who can work the phones, not a quote engine.
Single-carrier preference. If you'd rather have one underwriter relationship across your policies, go direct and price it: Check your rate at Hiscox, and see our full Hiscox review for where its direct model beats a marketplace — and our Simply Business vs. Hiscox comparison for the head-to-head.
App-first instant certificates. NEXT Insurance built its pitch on instant digital COIs and a mobile-first workflow; we review it separately in our NEXT Insurance review. By-the-job and short-term coverage shoppers — event vendors, gig trades — should also look at Thimble, which we cover in the comparisons.
Price context
A marketplace doesn't set prices — carriers' filed rates do. For expectation-setting, the published context as of mid-2026, from Insureon's cost data: general liability runs a $45-a-month median with a $250–$3,000+ annual spread, BOPs average $83 a month, and workers' comp runs a $54-a-month median. Your trade, state, payroll, limits, and claims history decide where you land inside those ranges — treat every number as a range, not a promise.
On fees: like any agency, Simply Business is paid commission by the insurer. You shouldn't see a separate brokerage fee added at checkout; if a line item you don't recognize appears, ask before you buy.
Verdict
Use Simply Business the way you'd use any good worksheet: to see the field before you commit. For first-time buyers in mainstream trades who need real coverage and a certificate this week, it's the strongest single front door we've reviewed — Compare quotes at Simply Business and read the carrier names as carefully as the prices. For complex risk, go find a specialist. For the one-carrier-for-everything crowd, price a direct writer alongside it and see which story your numbers tell. Our first-time buyer's walkthrough turns that into steps, our best small business insurance rankings place it among the field, and our coverage checker will tell you which policies to shop for in the first place.
