NEXT Insurance Review 2026: Fast COIs, Digital-First

NEXT is the app-first direct writer built around the certificate: quote online, bind, and share a live COI from your phone. We review where its appetite genuinely fits — trades, work trucks, certificate-gated jobs — and where a marketplace pass or a professional-liability specialist beats it.

Disclosure: BizQuoted is reader-supported: some "compare quotes" and "check your rate" links on this page are affiliate links, and if you use them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you — which never changes our rankings or the ranges we publish.

NEXT Insurance is the third kind of storefront in small-business coverage: not a marketplace shopping a panel like Simply Business, not a century-old specialist like Hiscox, but a digital-first carrier designed around your phone. Our verdict up front: for certificate-gated trades — cleaners, handymen, contractors, anyone whose next job starts with "send over a COI" — NEXT's instant-certificate workflow is the best-designed paperwork experience we've reviewed. The caution is structural, not personal: one carrier is one appetite and one number, and a single quote can't tell you whether it's a good one. Worth saying plainly: BizQuoted has no affiliate relationship with NEXT — nothing here is paid placement, and the compare links on this page go to its competitors. That's exactly why you can trust the praise.

How we review carriers

Same worksheet as every carrier review on this site: we walk the public quote flow, read the published policy materials and disclosures, and put advertised claims next to published industry cost data — no paid placement, and affiliate links never change a verdict. Full detail on our methodology page.

What NEXT is

NEXT launched in 2016 and built its book online-first: small businesses, quotes in minutes, policies managed from an app. It underwrites on its own paper, advertises coverage for over 1,300 business types, and at the time of this review its carrier holds an "A-" (Excellent) financial strength rating from AM Best. In 2025, Munich Re — one of the world's largest reinsurers, already an investor — agreed to acquire the company outright through its ERGO arm. Ratings and ownership change; check the current versions when you buy.

Like Hiscox, NEXT is a direct writer: the company that quotes you is the company that insures you and pays your claims. What it adds to that model is range. Alongside general liability, professional liability, and BOP-style bundles, NEXT writes commercial auto and workers' comp in many states, plus tools-and-equipment coverage for the trades. That matters because commercial auto is precisely the line Simply Business doesn't place and Hiscox refers out: if your business runs on a work truck, NEXT is one of the few digital-first shops that can put most of your program on one dashboard. (Workers' comp remains state-law territory — most states require it at your first employee, four states sell it only through a state fund, and thresholds vary, so confirm your rules with a licensed agent in your state or start from our state-by-state table.)

The live certificate, decoded

The feature NEXT built its reputation on is the certificate workflow. Buy a policy and the app generates unlimited certificates of insurance, free, immediately — and the design detail that separates it from a PDF in your downloads folder is the live link. Instead of attaching a static file, you send a link that always shows current coverage; the client (or their compliance portal) sees a certificate that stays fresh through renewal. Adding an additional insured — the request behind most "can you add us to your policy?" emails — is self-serve from the same screen, no phone call.

Two honest calibrations. First, same-day certificates are now table stakes: Simply Business and Hiscox both advertise certificate access immediately after purchase. NEXT's edge is the workflow — link-based, phone-first, unlimited reissues without friction — not exclusivity on speed. Second, a slick certificate doesn't change what's underneath: limits, exclusions, and whether the named insured matches your LLC still decide whether the paper satisfies the contract. Our COI anatomy guide covers what clients actually check, and our same-day COI walkthrough maps the fast path at any seller.

Appetite: where NEXT fits by trade

Trade profileFitWhy
Cleaning, handyman, landscaping, light constructionStrongThe design center: COI-gated service trades, tools coverage, liability and workers' comp on one dashboard
Fitness, retail, food serviceStrongMainstream appetite with bundle pricing
Work-truck operationsStrongOne of the few digital-first sellers writing commercial auto
Consultants and professional servicesMixedE&O is available, but Hiscox's profession-by-profession underwriting goes deeper
High-hazard work, height work, prior claimsWeakDigital appetite is mainstream appetite — you want an independent agent

The pattern: NEXT is built for the trades. If your risk is physical, mainstream, and certificate-gated, you're the customer it was designed for. If your risk is judgment-shaped — advice, design, code — the deeper professional-liability shop deserves the first look; our Hiscox review covers that model, and NEXT vs. Hiscox runs the head-to-head. Event vendors and gig trades that want by-the-job coverage should also read Thimble vs. NEXT before committing to an annual policy.

Price context — and why there's no NEXT number here

BizQuoted publishes only cost figures we can source and date, and we don't currently have a published, citable median for NEXT's book — advertised from-prices move too often to stand behind. So instead of decorating this review with a number your quote won't match, here's the published context: as of mid-2026, Insureon's median for small-business general liability is $45 a month, and most one-person service operations land between $30 and $60 a month. Where a NEXT quote falls against that depends on the usual movers — trade, state, payroll, limits, claims history. Treat any from-price as a floor and any single quote as one data point.

That last clause is the whole shopping strategy. Compare quotes at Simply Business to watch several carriers price the same profile from one application, and Check your rate at Hiscox if your work leans professional — then put NEXT's number beside both. Twenty minutes, three data points, and you'll know which storefront actually wants your class code.

Where it doesn't fit

  • Comparison, by construction. A direct writer can't show you the field. If your trade prices very differently across carriers — many do — a single-quote purchase is a guess.
  • Complex and high-hazard risk. Digital underwriting is fast because it's narrow. Declines and steep numbers at the edge of appetite are information, not insults; take them to an independent agent who can work the specialty markets.
  • Phone-first buyers. Support exists, but the product assumes you'll self-serve. If you want a standing relationship with a human who knows your account, no app-first seller is that model.

Verdict

NEXT earns its shortlist spot for exactly the buyer it was built for: trades and service businesses that live behind a certificate gate, want auto and liability in one place, and would rather tap a phone than call an agency. The certificate workflow is genuinely best-in-class; the cautions are the ones we'd attach to any single-carrier storefront. Shortlist it, price it against a marketplace pass, and let the numbers argue. Our best small business insurance rankings place NEXT among the field it competes with, and our coverage checker will tell you which policies belong in your cart before any seller does.

Frequently asked

Is NEXT Insurance a real insurance company?

Yes — a direct writer founded in 2016 that underwrites small-business policies on its own paper. At the time of this review its carrier holds an 'A-' (Excellent) financial strength rating from AM Best, and Munich Re agreed in 2025 to acquire the company. Ratings and ownership change, so check the current versions when you buy.

Does NEXT charge for certificates of insurance?

No — certificates are unlimited, free, and self-serve from the app or dashboard, including adding additional insureds. The certificate is a live link rather than a static PDF, so clients always see current coverage.

What does NEXT Insurance sell?

General liability, professional liability, workers' comp, commercial auto, tools and equipment coverage, and BOP-style bundles, with availability varying by state and trade. Commercial auto is the notable inclusion — many digital-first rivals don't write it.

Why doesn't this review list NEXT's prices?

Because we publish only sourced, dated cost figures, and there's no published median for NEXT's book we're willing to stand behind. For context, Insureon's published small-business general liability median is $45 a month as of mid-2026. Advertised from-prices anywhere are floors, not typical rates — the reliable move is comparing quotes for your own profile.

Is NEXT or Hiscox better for small business?

Different design centers. NEXT is strongest for certificate-gated trades that want liability, auto, and workers' comp in one app. Hiscox is strongest for consultants and professional services, where its profession-specific errors-and-omissions underwriting goes deeper. If you sit between the two, price both.

Compare quotes

We only link where a partner exists, and we never reorder these for a commission.

  • Simply Business

A marketplace that shops multiple carriers in one flow — the fastest way to line up quotes side by side, and strong for same-day COIs.

  • Hiscox

A direct writer (not a marketplace) with a strong appetite for consultants and service firms; professional liability is its bread and butter.
