Hiscox is the opposite bet from a marketplace: one carrier, underwriting its own paper, selling direct to very small businesses online. Our verdict up front: for consultants, freelancers, and professional-services micro businesses, Hiscox is the strongest direct first stop we've reviewed — professional liability is its home turf, and the underwriting is built profession-by-profession. For trades with heavier physical risk, its single-carrier appetite is the constraint: one quote can't tell you if it's a good quote, so run a marketplace pass alongside it.
How we review carriers
We review insurers by walking their public quote flows, reading their published policy materials and pricing disclosures, and comparing them against published industry cost data — no paid placement, and affiliate links never change a verdict. Full detail on our methodology page.
What Hiscox is
Hiscox traces to 1901 and the London specialty-insurance market; its US small-business arm has sold direct online for well over a decade, aimed squarely at operations with roughly ten employees or fewer. Hiscox's US carrier holds an "A" (Excellent) financial strength rating from AM Best, affirmed in late 2025.
"Direct writer" is the structural fact to price in. Hiscox underwrites, issues, and pays claims on its own paper — one counterparty from quote to claim, no marketplace between you. The trade-off is symmetrical: you get a specialist's appetite and consistent policy language, and you give up comparison by construction. A direct quote is a data point, not a survey.
The lineup — and whose paper each line is
At the time of this review, Hiscox's core lines are professional liability / E&O (the flagship), general liability, a business owner's policy, and cyber coverage. Two edges of the lineup are worth flagging because they're not Hiscox paper: workers' comp is arranged through a partner carrier — The Hartford at the time of this review — and commercial auto is referred to GEICO. There's nothing wrong with partner paper, but it changes who you'll deal with at claim time, and workers' comp is state-law territory besides: most states require it at the first employee, with thresholds that vary — confirm with a licensed agent in your state.
The worksheet habit this teaches: on any policy you buy through any storefront, read the "underwritten by" line on the declarations page. The brand on the website is not always the carrier on the paper.
"From $22.50 a month," decoded
Hiscox advertises professional liability from $22.50 a month and general liability from around $30 a month. Those numbers are real, and they are floors: what the lowest-risk profiles at base limits can see, not what a typical buyer pays. The honest way to use them is next to published medians:
| Number | What it is | Source, as of mid-2026 |
|---|---|---|
| $22.50/mo | Professional liability advertised from-price (floor) | Hiscox |
| ~$30/mo | General liability advertised from-price (floor) | Hiscox |
| ~$62/mo | Consultants' E&O published median | Insureon |
| $45/mo | Small-business GL published median | Insureon |
Plan around the median; treat the from-price as the best case. What moves you up from the floor is the usual list — profession, revenue, limits, claims history — and no ad copy changes that. Ranges, never promises.
Where Hiscox is strong
- Professional liability depth. The quote flow underwrites by profession, and the questions show it — a bookkeeper, an IT consultant, and a marketing shop get asked different things. That's the E&O coverage buyer's real advantage: a carrier that already understands the claim shapes of your trade.
- Micro-business center of gravity. Solo operators through roughly ten employees is the design point, not an afterthought.
- Online bind with same-day certificates, advertised — the COI gate matters to consultants too, the first time an enterprise client's vendor form arrives.
- One counterparty. The company that priced your risk is the company that handles your claim, with no marketplace seam in between.
For consultants specifically, our best insurance for consultants roundup shows how Hiscox stacks against the field.
Where it's limited
- One appetite. If your trade sits outside it — heavier construction and higher-hazard work, in particular — you'll see a decline or a steep number, and the flow can't show you an alternative. That's not a flaw; it's what direct means.
- Partner paper at the edges. Workers' comp and auto route to partner carriers, which adds back the extra seam the direct model otherwise removes.
- No comparison by construction. A single quote can't tell you whether it's a good price. The fix costs a few minutes: Compare quotes at Simply Business and put a marketplace's carrier panel next to Hiscox's number. Our Simply Business vs. Hiscox piece runs the head-to-head, and if digital-first speed is your axis, we weigh the direct writers against each other in NEXT vs. Hiscox — NEXT being the app-first carrier we review separately.
Verdict
Match the tool to the buyer. If you sell advice, code, design, or numbers — consultant, freelancer, IT, creative — start direct where the specialization lives: Check your rate on professional liability at Hiscox. If you want Hiscox's GL or BOP for a storefront or service operation, Check your rate at Hiscox and put one marketplace pass next to it before you decide — see our Simply Business review for the comparison half of that worksheet. And if your work is physical and your risk is heavier, run the marketplace first and let appetite sort you.
Whichever door you start at, start with the list: our coverage checker maps your trade and state to the policies that are required by law, commonly required by clients, or worth considering — typical published ranges included.

Frequently asked
Is Hiscox financially sound?
Hiscox's US carrier holds an 'A' (Excellent) financial strength rating from AM Best, affirmed in late 2025, and the group's underwriting history runs back to 1901 in the London specialty market. Ratings change, so check the current one when you buy.
What does Hiscox's 'from $22.50 a month' actually mean?
It's an advertised from-price: the floor available to the lowest-risk profiles at base limits, not a typical rate. For expectation-setting, Insureon's published median for consultants' E&O is about $62 a month as of mid-2026. Your profession, revenue, limits, and claims history set where you land.
Does Hiscox sell workers' comp?
Through a partner: at the time of this review, workers' comp quoted via Hiscox is arranged with The Hartford rather than written on Hiscox paper. Workers' comp is required by law in most states once you have employees — thresholds vary, so confirm with a licensed agent in your state.
Is Hiscox a broker or an insurance company?
An insurance company — a direct writer that underwrites, issues, and pays claims on its own paper for its core lines. The exceptions are workers' comp and commercial auto, which route to partner carriers.
Does Hiscox cover contractors and trades?
Some, within appetite — lighter-trade profiles can find GL and BOP coverage there, while heavier construction and higher-hazard work often falls outside it. If your trade is borderline, a marketplace pass alongside the direct quote tells you quickly whether Hiscox is competitive for your profile.
